dependency and indemnity compensation (Dic)
We fight for families who have lost a loved one due to a service-connected disability. We understand the emotional and financial strain that can follow the death of a Veteran, and we’re committed to helping surviving spouses, children, and parents pursue the benefits they’ve earned through their loved one’s service.
What is Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)?
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax-free monthly VA benefit payable to eligible survivors when a Veteran:
Died from a service-connected condition, or
Died from a condition that was caused or worsened by service, or
In some situations, died while the VA had recognized the Veteran as totally disabled for a certain period of time before death (even if the official cause of death is different)
DIC exists to provide meaningful financial support and to recognize the sacrifices made by both the Veteran and the family.
What the VA requires to grant DIC
To qualify, the VA generally needs proof that there is a link (“nexus”) between the Veteran’s death and military service. That can include:
A death caused directly by a service-connected disability
A death where a service-connected condition contributed substantially (for example, it made the Veteran materially weaker or less able to withstand the fatal disease/injury)
A condition that was not service-connected during life, but should have been—and can now be connected through medical evidence
Why DIC claims are often denied or delayed
Even strong DIC claims can be denied because:
The VA says the cause of death is “not service-connected”
Medical records are incomplete or not framed in a way the VA will accept
The VA fails to consider how a service-connected disability contributed to death
A medical opinion is missing, vague, or based on incorrect facts
Survivors are asked to navigate complex rules and deadlines while grieving
How we help
Our team has extensive experience handling DIC claims and appeals. We take on the heavy lifting—gathering records, identifying the best legal path, and building the evidence needed to prove eligibility.
We help families by:
Obtaining and organizing key records (VA file, medical records, death certificate, autopsy reports when available)
Developing the medical evidence needed to establish service connection, including strong nexus support when appropriate
Challenging VA denials and delays through the appeals process
Presenting a clear, well-supported case so the VA recognizes the full circumstances of the Veteran’s death
If your DIC claim has been denied, delayed, or you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to guide you through the process and fight for the benefits your family deserves.
